Is cousin marriage illegal in Norway?
Partly. Cousin marriage is restricted in Norway. Banned since January 2025, but officials can approve strong cases.
Storting lovvedtak 90 (2023-24), adopted 12 Jun 2024, added first cousins to Marriage Act s.3 from 1 Jan 2025; the same text lets the Statsforvalteren consent 'dersom sterke grunner taler for det'.
