Are exotic pets illegal in New Zealand?
Partly. Exotic pets are restricted in New Zealand. No new exotic species since 1998; those already here are legal.
Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996: any species not in New Zealand before 29 Jul 1998 is a 'new organism' and may not be imported or kept without EPA approval; snakes banned outright; exotic species already present (some reptiles, birds) remain legal (MPI).
